Dear Carillon Guild,
I am a student at the School of Foresrty and Environmental Studies, and I am organizing a scavenger hunt/ adventure challenge for a bunch of my fellow students for my birthday, on Saturday, April 28. I was hoping that there might be someone in the guild who would be willing to serve as one of the tasks in this hunt. Participating teams would be tasked to come to the tower within a specific hour during the hunt to see the bells being played.
I know this is an odd request, but it really would be fantastic... Please let me know if you think we may be able to work this out somehow.
Thank you so much!

"Going Home" theme from the largo movement of Dvorak's 9th Symphony, Anton Dvorak
I am looking for a recording of the Harkness Tower carillon playing the "Going Home" theme from Anton Dvorak's 9th symphony. I recall back in the fall of 1949, when I was a freshman at Yale, that I was very moved by that music.
I was so moved that in 1978 I purchased a 41-foot sailboat and named it "Going Home." I was so moved that I sailed that boat from Chicago to SF by the Great Lakes, the Erie Canal, the Intercoastal Canal, the Caribbean Islands to Grenada, the Panama Canal and back to SF in 13 months. That was a distance of close to 10,000 miles.
Just this month, 28 years later, I have created a DVD multimedia program with slides, photos, video, film, poetry and music. It is called the "Going Home Voyage." This is not a commercial production but for a Christmas gift to my three children who accompanied me on the voyage. Those children are now adults with children of their own. Next fall, I will have a grand daughter going off to college just as I did back in 1949.
I will be 76 years old this month. I have had four different forms of cancer. I feel my mortality. Before I go, I would like to give my children and my grandchildren the gift of the music that inspired me 57 years ago.
How may I obtain a recording of the Harkness Tower carillon playing the "Going Home" theme?

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Fred Rogers
Back in 1972, when the present Carillonneurs were just free-floating molecules, we held a National Symposium on Children and Television at Yale. For that occasion Carrilon virtuoso Jon Pareles, 1974 (now chief rock critic for the NY Times) performed several children's TV themes, including Rocky & Bullwinkle, Sesame Street, and Mister Rogers' theme "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood." That last is especially meaningful to me as Rogers was my friend and mentor from my time at Yale until his recent death. Although many find it merely campy, many more associate the song with simple caring among neighbors. If you play it, look out below Harkness Tower. I think you'll see some delighted reactions. Let me know if you need the sheet music. I'm on campus fairly often, so I'd love to know when it might be played. Thank you.

Canadian National Anthem, any you can find
My name is Linda and I am on the Canadian Club Committee here at Yale. It is very important to a substantial number of people, infact an entire country's Yale population, that we have the Canadian national anthem played tomorrow at the usual midday time. You see the final for the World Cup of Hockey is playing tonight. Canada is up against the Fins, and if they win it will be a great accomplishment and a proud moment for Canadians across campus and across the country. After a meeting tonight, we all synonomously agreed that this would be a great way to celebrate (if we
win) the next day :)
It would mean alot to me personally if you could give any help in making this wish happen. I hope to hear from you soon! I know this is short notice but it would be amazing if you could allow for this as a special request and give it preference considering the nature of the timing.
Thanks again for taking the time to consider our request,
Cheers,
Linda

All Mixed Up, 311
I just think it's the coolest song on the planet. Just hearing the beginning of the song on the carillon would make my day - no, more like my year!

.
Could you please stop playing the same songs over and over again? If you play an instrument that has a range of 5 city blocks, you guys have to learn some new tunes, ok?

Channing <channing28270@yahoo.com>
I love the sound of the carillon. I have some questions my questions are Do people who know how to play the Carillon know how to play the Angelus bells, 3 Bell peal and 4 bell peal. What does the angelus Bells, 3 Bell peal and 4 Bell peal sound like on a carillon that is played by a human.

What a well maintained site is this! I live in the Netherlands and play the carillon too. (loved to read the article from "de Telegraaf" (PDF). Keep Up the good work, and I am thinking about setting up such a website for my university too! Especially the audiofiles are great.
thank you, cheers Joost

Rob Lindquist <robert.lindquist@yale.edu>
P.I.M.P., 50 Cent
It's short and simple, and that steel-drum hook would just sound hot on the carillon.

Not Danny Boy, Folk
Is there a way to "unrequest" a song? You play "Danny Boy"/"Londonderry Air" so often, it has entirely lost its charms for me. How about another shade of Irish folk music, such as "The Star of County Down" or even "Galway Bay" ... anything but "Danny Boy." Please?

They used to play this one a lot during my freshman year, 99-00, and I thought it would be kind of nostalgic to hear it again before graduation ;) Let me know what you think! P.S. nice site, and thanks for all the music you guys.

Lizza <mwahahah@thisisfun.com>
Bolero, Ravel
I think we should come up with a listing of funny pieces for carillon. like, for example, Ewie with the Crookit Horn (ken, if you have anything resembling a crookit horn, i don't want to know). suzanne, i think you're overcaffienated for the same reason i am...thus i suggest something really gloppy from 352 (parsifal?).
...um, just checking to make sure the request form works...

Suzanne Bratt <suzanne.bratt@yale.edu>
Carillon, Handel
What am I saying? I haven't played that piece in a while. Oh - I guess I meant that I should practice it. :)
Excellent job on this request part of the site, Tiffany! Thanks so much for setting it up on such short notice!!
Also, I hope for your sake that you can edit the posting board. Wouldn't want too many caffeine-addled requests with horrific spelling and/or punctuation, innocent or otherwise, cropping up, now, would we? :)
